There’s a week left to NaNoWriMo, and I’m at 20,000 words. Not saying that reaching 50k is impossible by the end of the month, just that I’ll need to hit 7k per day to do it.
If it was just prose, I could probably do it, but I write interactive fiction a lot faster than I write novels, so I’m not going to be too hard on myself.
One of the things slowing me down was scope creep, so this week I reduced the number of distinct archetypes from nine to two; essentially, you play either a loser who needs to boost their self-confidence, or a jerk who needs to learn some compassion. This enabled me to gamify the character’s story arc – you are presented with opportunities to embrace or reject your new Truth, raising or lowering your Compassion/Confidence stat.
You can absolutely play as a bully who never learns to be a better person or a nerd who doesn’t learn up to stand up for themselves. You’ll get a different ending.
I’ve also spent a little time working in CSS to refine the game’s look and make it feel a little more “80s.”
This isn’t perfect and I don’t think it’s finalized but it feels better than the generic Sugarcube styling.
As always, if you’re interested in trying out version 0.4, feel free to give it a spin. If you notice any bugs or have any other feedback feel free to stop by my Discord channel and let me know. Finally, if you like what I’m doing and want to help support me do it, you might support me on patreon.
