Zeitgeist 1980 is a NaNoWriMo project for 2019. Normally National Novel Writing Month projects are – well – novels, but in this case I’m stretching the definition to include interactive fiction as well. Technically, by NaNoWriMo standards, this makes me a rebel.
I’m cool with that.
The story is one I’ve had rattling around in my head for awhile – making a game heavily inspired by 80s cinema and television without it being fanfiction. Specifically, for this story, I’m drawing from 1980 action comedy films Smokey and the Bandit II, Any Which Way You Can, and the television show Dukes of Hazzard.
The protagonist you play is a 16-year-old sent to visit with his cousin Colt over winter break while his parents are off on their second honeymoon in Paris. Colt is drawn from character elements of two different Bos: Burt Reynold’s character in Smokey and the Bandit II and Bo Duke from Dukes of Hazzard. He’s an ex-NASCAR driver lady’s man with a drinking problem and a very tarnished heart of gold.
The protagonist, meanwhile, is a high-school student belonging to a very blatant clique determined by a “personality test” style character creation sequence.
Currently that character creation sequence is the bulk of what I’ve got done. The project at this stage is being prototyped in Twine – whether it’ll stay that way or I’ll switch to Unity and Ink remains to be seen.
I intend to post an updated build weekly as November continues. You can find it here.
